Group Discussion

A group discussion is one of the best methods to evaluate many abilities in people. Universities and companies use group discussions in their the selection process. Leadership , team work, communication and logical reasoning are the skills that are generally observed.

Some jobs require certain attributes in a person to effectively carry out tasks — multi-tasking abilities, ability to handle crisis, temperament, patience, quick decision making and ability to arrive at a consensus. A group discussion is not a debate. As the name suggests, it is only discussion. In some GDs, you could be given some time to prepare, but usually, participants are expected to speak spontaneously on the topic.

DO’s

  • Speak pleasantly and politely
  • Respect and acknowledge the contribution of every member
  • Use proper vocabulary and choose professional words to disagree. Eg:  ‘Friend,  you have definitely said something different, but it may not be relevant to this discussion. Or say, “I have to say you have not done your home work, these are wrong facts. Research has shown that…”
  • Do not deviate from the topic
  • Do not show your superiority by raising your voice. It will portray you as bossy and dominating. Raise your hand and ask for a chance to speak
  • Use your voice effectively and smartly so that everyone can hear and respond to you
  • Make sure you listen to everyone and understand their point of view
  • Dress appropriately (preferably formals)
  • Keep track of the time
  • If somebody has not spoken, please encourage that participant to speak up.

DON’Ts

  • Never lose your temper
  • Avoid shouting
  • Gestures like pointing fingers and banging on the table will give an impression that you are aggressive
  • Do not interrupt when one of the participants is talking. Wait for your turn to speak
  • Do not criticise or ridicule any opinion
  • Do not use humour when it is not relevant

To gain confidence to attend GDs, you may also undergo specialised training from training institutes.
